Redefining the Holiday Season

Black Friday and Cyber Monday – Ahh yes, time-honored traditions in our country.

Some of us consider ourselves Black Friday warriors, courageously marching into the stores to seek heavily discounted gifts for loved ones. Others of us shudder at the mere thought of desperately searching for a parking space at 4am while also having a pretty good chance of being trampled by the Black Friday warriors later in the morning. Thus, we wait until the following Monday to snag the online deals in our pajamas from the comfort of our own home. (I definitely fall in the latter category.)

#GivingTuesday – hmm, what is this?

#GivingTuesday – taking place on December 2, 2014 – is the counter narrative to Black Friday and Cyber Monday. It reminds us that the spirit of the holiday giving season should be about community and not just consumerism. It is a global effort to harness the collective power of nonprofits, businesses, families and individuals to redefine how people think about, talk about and participate in the holiday giving season.

Nonprofits and the communities they serve will come together for one common goal on December 2nd: to celebrate generosity and to give! To join this global celebration, please consider giving to Mary Ryder Home on #GivingTuesday! We believe the most meaningful gift we can give our children, loved ones, friends and neighbors is the commitment to work together to help build a better world.
